About the President of the Republic of Armenia


Armen Sarkissian is the 4th President of the Republic of Armenia.

 

Armen Sarkissian is a physicist. He graduated from the Department of Physics of the Yerevan State University and holds a PhD in Theoretical Physics and Mathematics.

 

Before becoming President, Armen Sarkissian was the Ambassador of Armenia to the United Kingdom.

 

On March 2, 2018, Armen Sarkissian was elected President of the Republic of Armenia by the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia. The inauguration of the President-elect took place on April 9, 2018.

 

Our President is married to Nouneh Sarkissian, and they have 2 sons and 3 grandchildren.

Who can become President

 

In a country which is a parliamentary republic, the role of the President is very important. For that reason, a candidate must meet certain criteria to be qualified for the position of the President. These requirements are defined in the Constitution of the country.

For instance, in the Republic of Armenia, the same person may be elected President only once, and the President is not allowed to do any other paid work. The Constitution also defines other requirements for the President.

Any citizen of the Republic of Armenia may be elected President if:
 
He or she is 40 years or older
He or she has been a citizen of Armenia and has lived in Armenia for the last six years
The election process of President
 
The President of the Republic shall be elected by the National Assembly for a term of seven years
The same person may be elected President of the Republic only once
The President of the Republic may not hold any other position, be engaged in entrepreneurial activities or perform other paid work
The President of the Republic may not hold membership in any political party
