The oath of the President

All world leaders are required to take an oath. The President’s oath of office is taken after being elected President, but before carrying out any Presidential duties. The oath-taking ceremony is a very important event as it marks the beginning of exercising the Presidential powers and duties. In Armenia, the president-elect is sworn in as the President of the Republic of Armenia by addressing the nation with the oath of office at a special sitting of the National Assembly.

The Oath states:

“Assuming the office of the President of the Republic of Armenia, I swear to be faithful to the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia, to be impartial in the exercise of my powers, to be guided only by state and national interests, and to do everything in my power in order to strengthen the national unity.”

What the President of the Republic does


The President of the Republic is the head of the State.

 

The President of the Republic has a very important role, which is observing compliance with the Constitution.

 

The President of the Republic is a symbol of national unity, who in the event of political crises contributes to the establishment of stability in the country. The President has to be politically neutral and must not hold membership in any political party.

 

One of the most important functions of the President of the Republic is to represent Armenia on international platforms. The President pays state, official and working visits to foreign countries, as well as hosts leaders of other countries.

 

As the head of the State, the President sends congratulations, condolences or other messages to foreign leaders.

Signs the laws passed by the National Assembly.
Appoints the Prime Minister elected by the National Assembly.
Makes changes in the composition of the Government upon the recommendation of the Prime Minister.
Concludes international treaties upon the recommendation of the Government.
Decides on the issues of granting and terminating citizenship of the Republic of Armenia.
Decides on the issue of granting pardon to convicts.
Grants Awards and Confers Honorary Titles.
Receives the letters of credence and the letters of recall of diplomatic representatives of foreign states and international organizations.
Appoints judges.
Appoints and dismisses the supreme command of the armed forces and other troops.
